PARAPARAUMU.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

A very large gathering took place in the Coronation Hall on Friday night, she occasion being a reception to some iif-our returned goldiers. The evening •took the form cf a dance interspersed with vocal items. Amongst those contributing items were Miss Black. Miss Lynch, Mr Pitcher and Mr D. Lyncli. During the evening Cr. W. J. Howell briefly addressed the returned soldiers, ; and" on behalf of the residents presented each with a silver medal suitably inscribed.

Mr M. J. Donovan also addressed those present. Staff Army Sergeant P. C. Dement, on behalf of his comrades, thanked the residents for their unexpected but much

appreciated token of esteem. After the presentation supper was handed round by the ladies. Among those present were Captain A. T. White, M.C, Lieut. C. Clark, and Sister Lewis. -Mr W. Cromb (chairman of the reception committee) and Mr D. Howell acted as M's.C. for the evening, while the music was supplied by Mr A. Gregory, of Wellington. -#

Mrs C. Hale was the victim of a seri- ' ous and painful aecident at her residence at Paraparaumu last week. While seeing a friend off she stepped into the gig, intending to go down the drive to the gate, when one of the- shafts brok6 and Mrs Hale and her friend were both thrown out. Mrs Hale had twa ribs broken and was otherwise very badly bruised and shaken, and is still confined to her bed. The other occupant of the gig escaped without injury. Dr. " Huthwaite attended Mrs Hale, and she is slowly improving. - Mr W. Capper had two ribs broken through being struck with a plough lever on Saturday last. He was conveyed to-Otaki to receive medical at- ' tention. * -
