OTAKI CROQUET CLUB.

TIRST SOCIAL FUNCTION. The newly-formed Otaki Croquet Club's first dance was held in Brights' Theatre on Wednesday night, and should long linger in the minds of all present as one of the best functions of the season. The secretaryship was in the capable hands of Mrs J. B. Bills, end this lady is deserving of the highest prai<e for the fine work accomplished, it being mainly due to her untiring energies that everything passed off so pleasantly. Mrs Bills received valuable assistance from other ladies of the committee, and credit is due to all for the success attained.

The hall was tastefully and effectivcly decorated with bunting, the stage wo* nicely set out as a drawing-room with a profusion of choice spring flowers, the floor ha-< seldom, if ever, been in better order, while the catering arrangements were much above thft avcrase. The long tables were nicely arranged, ami gaily bedecked with aH abundance of flowers, which added gaiety to the scene. A pleasing feature also was the dresses of the ladies, some of whom appeared in. fancy - costume, and these, with the diversity of colour and bright lights, made the gathering especially attractive. Thanks to the masters "of ceremonies, Messrs George Xeble and A. Satherfey. everything passed off with a. happy swing, and .■ 'ded to by the fine music of Misses 2 kihana (piano) and Cook - (violin). all appeared to have a thoroughly eni< Table time. The happy little funet.on, which did not terminate till tbe aall hours of tee morning, will be

: oked back upon with pleasure by proniters and guests, and it is safe to predict that nest season's fuction will be an even greater success. As a result of the gathering the Club will have in hand a satisfactory balance, which will bo used to the best advantage on the newlv-made croquet lavm.
