SPORTING.
At the annual meeting of the Otaki Racing Club, held to-day, Mr R. H. Skipwith was appointed starter for tho club, while Mr Horo Karauti, of Ohau, was appointed judge. Mr Karauti returned thanks for his election, and promised to do his very best.
The Otaki Maori Racing Club’s course is at present looking well, but will undergo special preparation in the near future for the spring fixture, which lakes place on September 20 and
The County Council is at present metalling and widening a portion of tho Rahui road, but might with advantage do similar work on Te Koto road, which leads past the course gates. At present tho road fs in a bad condition, and iu wet weather is a quagmire. The Otaki Maori Racing Club is ever alert to tbe interest of its patrons, and to cater better for the comfort of the goneral public who frequent tho meetings has decided to erect a fine tea kiosk in Native style. A large number of pungas arc already on the ground, but the work of erection will not be started for some time yet,. The structure, which will be ready for the June meeting, should certainly prove aa, acquisition.
The annual meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club is taking place this afternoon. A large number of members are taking part. The Manawatu Hunt Club’s steeplechase meeting (totalisator), which takes place on Wednesday next- on the Awapnni course, will receive strong support from this district, quite a number of “sports” having signified their intention of being present. The meeting promises to be a good one, and keen contests aro expected. The first race starts at 11.30, and in all there will be eight cvefits.
, The Wanganui Jockey Club paid away £SSS9 os 6d in Government taxes during the year ending June 30. The chib also gave in donations £2300 to patriotic funds, £250 to hunt clubs, and £25 to the Agricultural Association. The sum of £10,200 was paid away in stake money. The net profit for the year was £1222 2s sd.
Detroit, who recently went amiss, has been blistered and eased off in work. It is hoped, however, that he will soon be fit and well. Mr Penman, his trainer, it may be mentioned, has almost recovered from a severe attack of illness.
