“Tho hand of death has indeed been busy,’’ said Sir Georgo Clifford in opening the Racing Conference on AA’ednesday, “and we have lost Messrs O. C. Cooper, E. J. Gothard, E. P. Bunny, ,T. Latham, C. AV. Reid, in addition to Mr D. Buick, whose connection with racing was an example of an untarnished record, and Mr AA 7 . 11. Hartgill, in whom we havo lost the most accomplished judge who ever decided a finish on our courses, nud whose sudden death was a blow to every racegoer and to the multitude of his personal friends." According to the Racing Conference report racing during the past year has maintained a good standard. Class has not, with few exceptions, shown much perceptible improvement. Jumping horses have deteriorated. Fields in the early part of the season were in some cases too large, but, owing to a lot of race meetings being crowded into the latter half of the season, due to rc- . strictions on racing in November snd ' December, and additional permits being granted, fields during the latter part of the season have in many cases been small.
