OTAKI POLICE COURT.

A young man, William Atkinson, a returned soldier, who has previously bcon convicted for drunkenness siuco his return, was before the Polieo Court to-day (Mr C. 11. Williams, J.p pre . siding).

Constable Sathcrley stated that early on Saturday afternoon he foufid Atkinson lying helplessly drunk on tho roadside by the Hospital, and it was fortunate for him that there was not. a more serious charge laid. Atkinson was a prohibited person.

Atkinson, in asking for leniency, said ho was not drinking so heavily as in the past, had now taken a “puli.” and) if given another chance would pevo d\! further tjpuble. -

The Bench looked upon tho offence as more than trivial, and pointed out that some returned soldiers were in th<j habit of working on the leniency of tho Bench. Atkinson had given the ‘police a let of trouble, and was liable to imprisonment. Mr Williams added that he would give him a lust chance, ami that it he again came before him w-ouli be dealt with in a severe manner. Tin’* tinw ho would inflict, a penalty, in default seven days’ in gaol. Constable Sathcrley expressed tho opinion that twelve months at Pakatoa would do Atkinson no huri*.
