MOTOR MISHAP.
THE LATE MR. FEECHTLING.
INQUEST.
An inquest was opened at Otaki oa the body of the late Mr Freehtling (who was recently injured in an accident) on Friday before Mr W. C. Nation (coroner), while Detective Quirkc conducted the case on behalf of the police. Dr. Hutkyaite, in his evidenkee, deposed that deceased was admitted to the Otaki Hospital in an unconscious condition, with a severe wound on tho right side of the head and a fractured skull. A portion of tae bone was missing, leaving an aperture in the skull four inches long by two wide. Brain, about half the size of a inuii’a closed fist, was missing. Deceased never recovered consciousness. The doctor *L-e uetified to conducting a post-mortem examination and found things as above stated. He added that an sxafiiinaUon of the abdomen and chest showed then to be in healthy cosditwu. Mr France, brother-in-law of defeated, examined and identihea the body as that of deceased. Tho inquest was then, adjourned to Levin, and was continued fe-r luvjbl, j*r THE VERDICT. PRACTICALLY ONE OF MANSLAUGHTER REIVER OF MOTOR ARRESTED. (Special to “Otaki Mail.”) After hearing the evidence at Levin this morning, the Coroner (Mr W. C. Nation) returned a" verdict that deceased met his death as a result of injuries sustained through being ran down by a motor ear on April 2lxl. The Coroner added that, judging from the evidence given by Constable Bagrie, the car which caused the accident was driven by a man named Joseph Wiliiama.
- As a result of the verdict the man Joseph Williams (a Native) was innsdlately arrested by the Levin police and brought before Mr B. K. Gardener, J.Tcharged with, having, by negligent driving of a motor ear on April hist, caned the death of deceased, R- If. Freehtling.
Accused was remanded to May H -> when he will appsar before the b.M. at Lev in.' Bail f£ 100) wai allowed.
