A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The lovely groumhT of Major Tatum were on Wednesday afternoon opened ' to the general public,' the occasion of a garden parrv to raise funds for the Manakau Anglican Clrurch. The. day was an ideal one, and although the place was not. seen at its best, it certainlv proved very attractive, and just the place for such a function. The lino, large, well-kept lawn, tho neat flower beds,' the beautiful flowering shrubs, the aviaries, with rare birds, tho brooklet containing gold-fish, and the hundred-and one other attractions were fully appreciated; by. tho - gathering. The attendanco was quite satisfactory as far as the ladies were concerned; but the'sterner sex were conspicuous by their absence. Tlic' former did practically all the work, and credit is due to them- for the capablo way in which affairs -were managed. Mrs 'Micklc, as secretary, looked upon her multifarious duties as-a-labour of love, and it was pleasing to note that : she had --many wiiling* helpers. Tho plain and fancy work -stall was presided over by Mrs Dimock-and-Misses Cotter (2), the vegetable-stall 4 by- Mesdames- Burnell and A. Scholes; cake stall,. Mesdames Nees and Dalzell; sweets wore in charge ot Misses Ruby and Myra Bcvan, Maney, and Burnell; the afternoon tea stall presided over by Mesdames W. Miss Hammond was assidious in< enticing those present to guess the weight of a nicely-iced cake given -by Mr A. V. Hornig, while others displayed interest in a number-guessing competition for a lovely cake donated by Mrs Drake. It was pleasing to see the stalls all well laden by the gifts of various people, irrespective of denomination, while credit is due. in no small.measure to members of the Ladies' Guild, who had worked well for the success of the tuidertaking.' . Mrs Hammond donated a drum of ice cream, which was a great attraction.

All present appeared to spend a most enjoyable time, and'it is. safe to predict that on the next occasion that the lovely and convenient grounds are open to the public the attendance will' be larger. Miss Morse and Mr C. Cotter tied in the weight-guessing competition for Mr Hornig's cake and divided the prize, while °Miss Jesson won Mrs Drake's cake. The proceeds of the function amounted to £27, which is most gratifying to the promoters.
