DEATH AND FUNERAL OF N.Z. SOLDIER.
(Extract from Hitchin Newspaper.): < < The death took place at Hitchin; Military Hospital last week of Sergeant G. V. T. M.M., a member of the New Zealand Signal Reserve Company, billeted at Stevenage. The funeral took place on Friday week at the Stevenage Parish Church, and was, the occasion of a signal display of re-. speot to' the memory of the deceased. The New Zealanders have become specially popular with the townspeople by reason of their uniform courtesies, and hundreds were present at the graveside. Practically the whole of the Reserve Company attended the funeral. The coffin, containing the .remains, was covered rvith the Union Jack and the New Zealand national emblem, and was conveyed on a gun-carriage to its last resting-place. A large number of floral emblems surrounded the coffin. Colonel Burton walked in front of the gun-car-riage. and Mrs Knight, matron of Hitchin "Workhouse, for whose attention to their comrade the soldiers were especially grateful, also walked in the procession.
'' Sergeant Moore, who was 41 years of age, had fought throughout the Boer war. On the outbreak of ■ bigger campaign in 1914 he again volunteered, and went, through the Gallipbli camwhen the- Anzacs covered, themselves with undying glory.. %Elc alsosaw service in Egypt, and had fought in France, where he won the Military Medal for a conspiciuous act of bravery.
"Six months ago he went to NewZealand on what is called, in-colonial terms, a tour of-duty, coming back to Stevenage about two months -ago". Being taken ill, .he was removed for attention to Hitchin, where, after a short illness, he died. Sergeant-Moore,, in civil life, was postmaster at Marton, Now Zealand, many of his relatives living at Sydney, New South Wales. He was the- first New Zealander-whose decease necessitated the performance of-the burial service in-the parish, and the grave will always.be an-honoured one, for ho came from the ends of the earth to help in the day of stern necessity.
