The War in Corea,

London, September 18.

Fifty thousand Japanese were engaged in the battle near Seoul. A report is current that Li Hung Chang has committed suicide in consequence of his degradation. Many Japanese noblemen have volunteered as soldiers. The war fever continues to rage very fiercely. The Times considers that the battle has changed the balance of power in the East, and may have a far-reaching effect. The victory was due to the Japanese supremacy, enabling them to convey troops to Corea. Shanghai, September 17.

The Japanese captured the entire effective staff of the Chinese troops, including Commander Fonksian and four generals. Great piles of rifles and a large quantity of warlike stores were also taken.

The Japanese are arranging to ship 14,000 prisoners taken in the recent battle to Japan. Several Chinese towns are showing signs of panic, as a Japanese invasion is feared.

On news of the victory reaching Tokio, there was great rejoicing. Bells were set ringing and a salute fired. It is doubtful whether the Japanese will engage in war with the Coreans before winter.

Japanese spies have for some considerable time swarmed in the arsenals, forts, and camps in Pekin and the provinces. The Chinese are dealing severely with spies when captured, whether Japanese or Chinese.
