MAGISTRATE’S SITTING The monthly sitting of the Opotiki Magistrate’s Court was held in the Courthouse on Friday last, Mr. E. L. Walton S.M. presiding. The list of cases was only a short one. The-police also .proceeded against liewai who was charged that on •September 1, 1947, he converted to his own use a. gent’s bicycle valued at £S, the property of George David White. It- was stated that defendant took the bicycle from Opotiki and went down, the Coast where it was later recovered by the police. Rewai was convicted and fined £8 and costs 15/-. The police salo proceeded against George Hudson who was charged that on 18th. October, being a native he did aid and assist some person unknown in the supply of liquor to himself for consumption off licensed premises in the proclaimed district of Matatua. He was convicted and fined £5 and costs 245.
Horace Ronald Russell faced a charge that on 24th. October at Opotiki whilst a public dance was being held in St. Mary’s Hall lie did have liquor in his control in the vicinity of such hall. After hearing the police evidence the defendant was fined £-3 and costs 10s, Wircpa Tangira was preceded against by the police on the charge of assaulting Reuben Walter Parkinson at Te Kaha on sth. November. Tangira was convicted and fined £-2 with costs ss. The Opotiki Borough Council (Inspector J. H. Morell) charged Anthony George Thompson with operating a motor lorry which. did not carry a current warrant of fitness. Defendant was convicted and fined 10s. and costs 10s.
The council ( also proceeded against Raymond Athol Young who was charged that' on 17th. October at Opotiki he drove a car without being a holder of a driver’s license. ALTERCATION IN COW-SHED WOMAN ASSAULTED
Oke Waiapu, a Maori aged 51 appeared before Mr. C. Pipe J.P. in the Opotiki Police Court on Saturday, charged with assaulting Kathleen Kelly the previous day. A remand was granted until yesterday when Waiapu appeared before Messrq. J. T. Merry and C. Pipe, Justices.
The story disclosed to the court showed that defendant and the woman had some words at a cowshed at Rahu and Waiapu threw a bucket of milk at the woman who was hit on the head by the bucket- The woman threw the bucket back at the defendant but missed. It was at fust thought that the woman had been-badly injured and she- was taken to hospital and immediately discharged the injury being only a superficial one. In convicting and sentencing defendant, to 7 days’ imprisonment in the Opotiki gaol, the Bench issued a warning that he would have to behave himself in future other-; wise he would be severely dealt with.
