OPOTIKI’S IRON LUNG
APPEAL FROM AUCKLAND APPARATUS ON LOAN An urgent appeal to the Opotiki Hospital for a loan of its iron lung to the Auckland Hospital Board has been received, and the apparatus has been packed and awaits shipment to Auckland. The-iron lung was a gift to the Opotiki Hospital some years ago from Lord Nuffield, who offered all hospitals the same privilege. Seme hospital boards did not take advantage of the offer.
The iron lung -has been stored in the Isolation Ward of the Opotiki Hospital and is fitted up ready for use although fortunately up to the present occasion has never arisen for its use. A number of more serious respiratory cases of infantile paralyis cases hare occurred in Auckland where only one iron lung was available for treating patients. Dr. James, superintendent'of the Opotiki Hospital, stated to-day that the chances of ever using an iron lung in a district of this size were fairly remote.
