WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAIOTAHI TENTH BIRTHDAY The tenth birthday of the Waiotalii Women’s Institute was celebrated at a social evening and dance in the Waiotalii Hall on. August 11th., when members’ families and members of sister institutes were entertained. A varied programme interspersed with dancing, was enjoyed, Mr. Malcolm Burke acting as M.C. Music was provided by -Mrs. M. King, with extras by -Mrs. Burke, Miss I). Anderson and Mr. Malcolm Burke. Becitations by Rita Wyllie and a pianoforte solo by Daphne Peeve were heartily en-cc-red. A relay race with paper bags between, three teams caused much anuisement. Songs by Airs. Burke, Mrs. W. Pavne, Miss B. Du Fontet, and Mr. Malcolm Burke and community singing led by -Mr. G. Watson, were enjoyed. A enc-aet play “Get Out of Your Cage” was presented by Mesdamos Gate, B. Looney, Leishman, C. White and W. Wagner and -Miss B. Du Pontct. All’s. W. Payne welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that those re-unions would long he continued. Miss Doris Looney presented -Mrs. Wool field, pres idle nt of the Federation. with a charming posy. -Mrs. WoolJiold congratulated Waiotalii Women’s Institute on attaining its tenth
birthday,; and -Mrs. Gault and Mrs. Cooper spoke on behalf of the Otara and Opotiki Institutes. At supper time a beautifully decorated cake with ten candles, was cut by -Mis. A. Snell, who made it. OPOTIK! INSTITUTE A very pleasant- evening was spent at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute, when the grandmothers entertained. The president. Mrs. Thompson, presided over a very good, attendance of members. The meeting was opened with the institute song and creed. A beautiful silver cake stand won by the Opotiki Drama Circle was on view. At the conclusion of general business. the president requested the grandmothers to stand, 17 being prescut. Mrs. Thompson presented each grandmother with posies and shoulder sprays, whilst all present sang “Little Obi Lady”. The president then vacated the chair andt Mrs. Sinclair took charge. The first item on the programme was a vocal duet, “Juanita”, sweetly sung by .Mrs. H. lomig and Airs. JP. Clark. ’ A reading by Mrs. Sydenham was greatly enjoyed by all. The roll call, “Definition of a Friend”, was well responded io. Mrs. Bennett gave a most interesting talk on home-made bread making, and had some lovely loaves on display. A competition, arranged by .Mrs. T. Thompson, was won by Miss Sydenham. A play reading, “A Sense el Humour”, caused much laughter. Ihe characters were; Mrs. Short (Wilfred). .Mrs. Clark (Alice). Airs. I 1 o>x (the doctor), Airs. Sinclair (Air. Front-), Mrs. Young (Nut). An interesting reading was given by Airs. (-. Aiortensen. A dainty supper was served by the hostesses. Airs. Boiiglieu (Australia) delighted the audience with a pianoforte solo, “A Boy’s Kendoring of the Blue IMis of Scotland!”, and as an cm core sang a chorus. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
