SHEEP-WORRYING
CONTROL OF DOCS ATTEMPT TO BE AIADE In an atempt to reduce sheep-worry-ing, the Cook County Council has decided to prepare a letter for submission to the Alinister of Agriculture, the Hon. AY. Lee Alartin, and the counties’ conference, suggesting that dogs should be chained up at nights. Cr. F. S. Bowen said that at- Home, dogs .must be chained up at nights, and he suggested that the same system should be adopted in New Zealand. Alost of the worrying in New Zealand was done by stray dogs and those from -Maori pas. Very few of the settlers’ does were ever involved.
He suggested that some scheme ot insurance could be evolved', and something should be set aside out oi the dog tax for the payment of compensation for sheep worried, lie also suggested that, spine increase might be made in the license fee for dogs other than sheep’ or cattle dogs. Cr. J. Ft Benson', said lie was in sympathy with Cr. Bowen’s proposals, and asked for information regarding the percentage of dogs other than working dogs' registered in the county. The county clerk, Al:r. F. T. Robinson. said) that- not very many dogs were registered in the county at the higher rate for non-working dogs.
.It was decided to write to the Minister of Agriculture and the counties' conference .oil the lines suggested.
