SUGGESTION TO COUNCIL DEPUTATION received - - '■ ■ -I PHYSICAL WELFARE CAMPAIGN SU IT ABLE B UILLHN G AVAILABLE - A deputation ’from the Opotiki Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was received by the Opotiki Borough Council last night, being introduced by CT. F. J. Short, who explained that the primary object of the committee was to provide for the physical welfare of the young people growing up. Extensive outside facilities for sport were available in the district but indoor facilities were lacking, Mr. Short stated. The local committee was putting its energies into the problem id' filling the latter needs. Quite recently the borough council had attempted to provide a building which would have contained suitable indoor facilities for sports.

Air. de Montalk, on behalf of the deputation, said the committee could not do everything- They had l been advised to g<> cautiously. There was no community centre in O'potiki. They hoped to cater for boxing and many other indoor games and other forms of recreation. They hoped to get the council toi interest itself in a community centre scheme. A suitable building was available in King Street and it was hoped the council would he able to arrange mean.s of securing this building. They believed a community centre would help the" young people along. .’1 lie building wag SU feet long by about 40} feet wide. The building could be lengthened by 40 feet and a lean-to c-ould be put on each side. These additions • would cater for a number of things. Air. de Montalk thanked the council for the favourable hearing. Cr. Short suggested the council endeavour to secure an option over the properties mentioned and that a special meeting be held to go fully into the question. Cr. Uriel go i • considered it would be of considerable assistance were the committee to give an estimate oi probable- revenue. The deputation then retired. At the conclusion of the meeting the council decided to endeavour to secure an option over the building and acre of land, and to hold a special meeting of the council on ' Thursday night.
