Great credit is due to the many willing helpers in uniform who made the collection. Wharf Extensions. According to advice received from Mr. W. AN'. Upton at last night’s meeting of the Opotiki .Borough Council, the extensions to the Opotiki wharf will be completed at an early date. The engineer stated that most of the decking had been concreted. inspector Not Present. Comment on the absence of the .district health inspector was made at last night’s meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council. At the previous meeting of the council it was decided to ask the inspector to attend last night’s meeting of the council to deal with matters in connection with sanitary drainage. On the motion of Cr. Stevenson, the clerk was instructed to write asking for an explanation cf the inspector’s absence. Rooster as Foster-parent, The . unusual sight of a rooster acting as foster-mother—or perhaps, foster-father—to a chicken, is being enacted in a Christchurch fowl-fun. Tlie rooster lias literally taken the chicken under its wing and. during the day. assists it in its endeavour to find foodl by scratching up the soil and then allowing the chicken to collect the food "exposed. Even at night, the, chicken does not forsake its adopted parent, but nestles under its wing. The maternal instincts, cf the liens do not seem to lie aroused by this display of affection on the part of the rooster. Opening of Bridges. Advice has been received that the Hon. It. Semple. -Minister of Public Works, will not be able to open the two coastal bridges and unveil the Kcopu memorial on Monday next. The memorial will be unveiled at Maraenui at neon on -Monday, Sir Apirana Ngata and the member for the district, Air. A. G. Hultcpiist, performing the ceremony. Although official advice has not yet been received it is understood that the Baukokore bridge will be opened oil Tuesday next. The new meetinghouse at To Kahn will be opened on 'lluesday morning. Physical Welfare. The Opotiki Physical Welfare Committee met on Monday night, when the report of the special committee, which investigated the suitability ot business premises in King Street for recreational purppses, was received. On the motion of Mr. O. Morris, seconded by Mr. G. Tabb, it was decided to approach the bdrough council on the matter of the purchase! of the premises. -Messrs. A. S. de Mcntalk and, Buttp'U wore appointed members of the delegation. Mr. de Montalk reported on his recent interview with -Mr. Hultcpiist, AI.P. Those present were: Messrs. C. Morris, C. Tabb, A. G. Stevenson, F. J. Short, W . A. Gault, A. S. de Montalk, G. \V. Button and Mrs. A. 0. Hampton. Apologies for absence were received Irani Messrs. W. T. Bturrot, G. S. Moody and Mrs. O’Sullivan. Invercargill Trams May be Ab-lished. The Invercargill City * Council is to apply to the -Minister for PublicWorks. the I ioil. I\. Semple, lor statutory authority to abplish the tramway system. At a meeting of the council, the trading committee reported that it * was ' very concerned at the ascending scale, of translers required! I rent the general account (which really meant rates) to balance the tramway account. For the year ended March 31 1936, £1550 was required. For the current financial year, it was estimated that £544:1 would! be required. The sleepers and original rails in use were approaching the end of their useful life, which meant that a very heavy outlay for renewal was necessary in the near future.
