AMATEUR ATHLETICS
FINAL NIGHT MEETING - MANY CLOSE FINISHES Despite a number of strong counterattractions'. there was a fair attendance of .spectators at the final night •meeting of the Opotiki Aihateur Athletic and Cycling Club, held on the reserve on Friday night. Competition was very keen throughout tlie night and there were' many clo>se finishes, 'presenting the judges with a difficult task. In tlie senior cycle one mile even.t, competitors were bunched at the finish kind a crash resulted 1 , only two men officially finishing. An attempt on the cycle lap record was made by the holder, B. Vercoe, who returned a time of fio 1-5 seconds, only one-fifth outride the record. The first half of the lap was done in fast time but the rider lost speed over the final distance.
