STREETS AND FOOTPATHS

LOAN PROPOSAL DECISION BY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING HELD A special meeting of 'the Opotiki Borough Council was held in the berougli chambers on Tuesday night. Present: the Alayor (Mr. G. Aloody), Crs. S. E. Webb, G. v L. Day, C. D. Brown, F.' W. Bridger and F. J. Short. Air. W. H. Briggs (town clerk.) and borough foreman (Air. J. Sergeant) were also in attendance. , 'Air. Briggs stated at the beginning of the meeting that a suggestion had been made that the streets, where there were no footpaths, should be .sealed to a width of about 14 feet, and that sealed pathways be put into each dwelling property. When CT .Day was asked for his opinion he complained that the meeting had been called for 7,30 o’clock but that he had had to listen to a works committee meeting for long after the time the council meeting was supposed to start. Nothing had been said and lie was not even aware whether the council was sitting or the works committee meeting still in. progress. The council was a small one and he thought the whole council should work together ancll suggested that all members be on all. committees. CV. Bridger spoke in support ol Or. Day’s views. Cr .Short said any member of the council could attend committee meetings and make suggestions. Cr. Day in reply said lie had only been a. councillor for 12 months and he was still in the dark about things. Ho thought that any work over £lO in cost should be tendered for and local people have a chance. Cr. Brown said his experience on the council was that it would be better if all members were on all committees. Cr. Stevenson complained they were getting away from the point. r l lie council had met for a particular purpose. Cr. Webb said the works committee had no right to do things without the authority of the council. Cr. Stevenson suggested that the finance committee should meet more often. Continuing Cr. Stevenson asked if the council could get an idea of the cost of the sealing. The idea was to raise a loan to' undertake the work of sealing streets and putting down footpaths. The council then went into the question of which streets should he sealed and! the plan of the borough was studied at some length, it was dccideded to. consider sealing practically every street in the-borough, the total distance being about six miles. Councillors considered that ratepayers would strongly support the suggestion if a poll were taken. Cr. Short said that- residents would have
