SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL DECISION TO RAISE LOAN

A special meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was held in the •Council chambers on Tuesday night, the M]ayor (Mr. G. S. Moody), occupying the chair. \ The town clerk (Mr. AY. H. Briggs) stated that no official intimation had been received) but it was known the Opotiki County Council had agreed to contribute £SO towards the cost of the proposed PJunket and Rest rooms. Members of the council expressed plea-sure at *the intention of the county to contribute towards the cost and a discussion ensued as to the best method of raising the balance required. Cr. Short suggested the council ask the Government if it was prepared to subsidise the proposed building- . Cr. Johnson said he was ol the opinion that the whole amount could he raised by subscription. A suggestion was made that the Borough Council should contribute £SO and that an attempt be. made to raise the balance by public subscription. Cr. Stevenson said he was strongly of the opinion that the ratepayers should have the final say. He thought they were only wasting time and should get on with the job. After further discussion Cr. Short moved that the council erect the rooms and the means to finance the construction of the building be by loan and) that the Loans Board he approached for permission to take a poll. The motion was seconded by Cr. Stevenson and carried. C*r. Johnson: AYe’re nearer to finality than we’ve ever beene. It was considered that in addition to 'the Opotiki County Cmmeil’s contribution it would be necessary to raise £BllO. Members of the council said ihev bad an assurance that the ladies of the district would provide the necessary furnishings.
