OPOTIKI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTKjLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borotigh Council was held last night in the borough chambers. .Present: the Mayor (Mr. G. 8. Moody). Councillors S. !£• Webb, T. G. Johnson, .‘I. L. Day, C. D. Brown, F. W. Bridger, A. G. Stevenson, F. J. Short and Mr. W. H. Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—General Account £IOOO 13s 2d, Wharf Account £BO 13s 2d, Domain Board Account. £2 13s 3d. Bank balances were given as follows: District Fund’ (dr.) £llOB Os (kl. wharf (cr.) £O5l 11s 7d, Domain Board (dr.) £2l 15s 2d. Deserve.—The Chief Surveyor, Gisborne wrote in connection with the survey of the waterworks and education reserve, Otaia. Cr. Day moved ami Cr. Johnson seconded that the council acquire the area referred l'j in the education reserve. The motion wan carried. Domain Board Overdraft.—The Auu-iter-General wrote noting the method by which it was proposed to wipe out the Domain Board’s overdraft. Commemoration Service.— the Rev. C. G. G. Salt wrote inviting the Mayor and members of the council to attend the special Rev. Carl Yolkner Commemoration Service to be held’ in St. Stephen's Church on February 2G. Lt was decided to reply staring, that as many members of the council as possible would attend the service, which will be conducted! by the Bishop ol Waiapu. !

.Reserve Charges.—'flic secretary of the Opotiki Rugby Union wrote stating that the union considered the charge of 15s for each playing Saturday to, be excessive. The union had to pay the cost of marking the ground, it was explained in the letter. Cr. Bridger moved that the chairman. and secretary ol the union be asked to meet- the council and the matter discussed. Or. Stevenson said it was a pity that it was necessary to make nu\ elm rgc. Cr. Bridger remarked that it .vouid be very nice if the council were able to do that, lie added that the sports botlies could not complain ol the treatment given them. The town clerk presented figures showing that the cost- of upkeep oi the reserve over the last two years averaged approximately C 3 weekly. It was further pointed cut that the regulations were being “stretched’’ to enable the Rugby, Union to make a charge for each playing day. The motion was earned. Reports.—The reports presented by the health inspector. work-' committee am! traffic inspector were approved. Included in the list of inipoundiiigs was a number of horses and two bulls. Ragwort.—lt was derided to draw the attention of the inspector to numerous patches of ragwort, throughout the borough. Thanks.—The Opotiki Amateur Athletic and C ycling Club wrote thanking the council for the good order in which the reserve had been kept-, ami especially for the condition ol the ground tor the big day meeting. Penalty.—The council decided to fix the usual penalty on. rates tor the current year, the last day of payment to he March 24. Reservoir. —At the suggestion of the Miayor the foreman, was asked to report on the condition of the dam, the Mayor stating that it was about

time the dam was again cleaned. Plunket and 1 Rest-Rooms. A letter was received from the Plunket and Rest-room Committee, asking the council to provide the rooms, in accordance with the plan submitted. Air. Briggs said the ladies had looked over the plans and hadi approved of them. Cr. Johnson said that if the council waited for the County Council to do anything they would be very old. Cr. Short suggested, they submit the plan and estimate to the County •Connell and see what they would do. Cr. Stevenson said he did not think they would! get anywhere. Me was still of the opinion the borough should provide the facilities. Cr. Johnson said he agreed with tins view. Cr. Day thought there would he no harm done in trying again. It was pointed out that the County Council would not recognise the committee! and had asked for a plan and an estimate. The, borough had not yet submitted the plan. Cr. Johnson said he would only agreo to submit the plan if a special meeting of the borough council took place on Tuesday next. After further discussion the council decided to submit- the plan and estimated cost to the County Council and to ask if the latter body was prepared to assist financially in erecting the necessary building.
