IXSPKCTIOX IVY COUNCILLORS MOTOR I STS’ OFFFNCKS Prior to the commencement of business at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council last night, the Mayor ami councillors visited the corner of Richard and Church Streets where work lias been clone on the corner at Kidd’s Garage. The inspection. was made as a result of a coinplaint that motorists were cutting across the footpath at the corner, instead’ of using the roadway. Similar complaints have been received by the Opotiki News, one motorist in taking the right-hand corner going right on to the wrong side of the road and cutting in behind pedestrians standing on the path. Cyclists have also been using the paths lor a short cut. When the members of the council returned to the council chambers, the question of making the corner safer was immediately dealt with. Cr. We hit moved that three posts In' erected at the corner and the motion was seconded by Cr. Brown. Cr. Short moved as an amendment that domes lie put in at the cormir. Seconded by Cr. Stevenson. Cr. Short added that the inspector should he instructed to give special attention to the corner. Cr. Bridger said he was opposed to posts on corners. Cr. Day said he thought the posts would he much better protection for the school-children. There was nothing to indicate the coiner of the path at present and! they should not wait until a child was killed. Tlu? action of motorists and cithers in flagrantly breaking the law in flitting: the corner was strongly condemned hv councillors who considered that offenders should he immediately prosecuted. On a vote being taken the aineiidmeiit was carried, Crs. Brown and Webb asking that their objections he recorded.

It was decided, to instruct the traihe inspector to pay particular attention to the corner and to take action against offenders.
