WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

THE OPOTIKI INSTITUTE The Jaiiuary meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday, 14th. January. There was a good attendance of members and the programme, was provided by the “spinsters”. The meeting commenced with the Institute Song and Creed, after which the minutes of the December meeting* were read, and confirmed and the treasurer’s report accepted. A verbal invitation was received from the Woodlands’ Institute for members to attend a garden party to be held at the residence of Mrs. Noble, Hospital Hill, otn Tuesday, 17th. January. It was announced by the President that a stall in aid of Institute funds would be held at next meeting of the Institute. Miss Ferguson then took the chair on behalf of the spinsters. Two very enjoyable solos were rendered by Miss Val. , Thompson, “Sweet, and Low” and ‘‘Frog on the Bank”. A competition arranged by Miss E. Bridge, of partly completed sketches, was won by Miss Jean Murray, and a musical competition of old songs was won by Mrs. Fox. A number of subjects for impromptu speeches were supplied and caused much amusement. The winners of a competition of well known personalities, were Mrs. Sydenham and Mrs, Evershed, who represented Grandma, and Grandpa. This meeting of the Institute fell on the president’s birthday and members took the opportunity of wishing Mrs. Fisher a happy time and presenting her with a charming bouquet of sweet peas and rose buds and also a birthday cake adorned with twenty-one candles. At the conclusion of supper Mrs. Fisher lit the candles and cut the cake. All joined in singing “For She’s a Jc-lly Good Follow”. A very dainty supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdaines Miller, Merry, Smith and Miss McCallum. The flower competition, bowl of phlox, was won by Miss Bridge. Mrs. P. Clark was in charge Q f the sales table. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the meeting.

MEETING AT WOODLANDS The monthly meeting of the Woodlands AA’omen’s Institute, was held recently at the home of Airs. Noble, Opotiki, Otara and Waiotahi institutes were the guests of the AYoodlands Institute. The grounds and gardens were in their usual beautiful order and a most enjoyable, afternoon was spent by all present. Various games and competitions had been arranged, Mrs. R. A. O’Sullivan being the winner of two competitions. Afternoon tea was served in the shade oi the trees. A hearty vote of thanks to the hostess concluded the afternoon.
