FIRE NEAR MATAWAI
ROADMAN’S COTTAGE LOST HOMESTEAD ABANDONED BIG AREA ABLAZE AI AT ANY AI, Thursday. A fire in partly cleared country in the Koranga area has caused the abandonment of Air. AY. Eilliner’s homestead and also of the roadman’s cottage occupied by Air. C. Wattam. A roadman’s cottage on the Aloanui road occupied bv Air. Ale Lean was destroyed by the fin; which swept that area. The fire started in the Aloanui area a few days ago, and, fanned by the strong westerly gale, reached serious proportions yesterday. These is no standing hush in the district-. but much of the country contains logs, stumps and! dry growth, and the fire now covers a wide area.
The Alotuhora township is encircled by smoke, but there the position is not serious so long as the. wind holds in the north-westerly direction. Here again there is no bush in the immediate vicinity, and the fire is among second growth and stumps. It there is a change of the wind to the south, however, the-position may become serious.
