OPOTIKI BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING ESTIMATES CONSIDERED
The monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Cbuncil was held last night in the borough chambers. Present : The - Mayor (Air. G. S. Moody), Councillors G. L. Day, T. G. Johnson, S. E. Webb, 6. D. Brown, F. AY. Bridger, A. G. Stevenson, F. J. Short and Ah- AV. H. Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—District Fund Account. £5-13 17s lOd; AVharf Account. £1(13 2s 3d; Domain Board Account, £ll 9s lid. Bank Balances wore shown as; District Fund (dr.) £1720 IBs 4d; AVharf (cr.), £l2O Os 2d; Domain Board (dr.) £25 9s Gd; Cemetery Account (dr.) £0 13s id. Inward Correspondence. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: Housing. —The Director of Housing Construction wrote in connection with the payment of rates etc' on State houses. —Cr. Johnson said the sections should be treated in the same way as private sections. On the motion of Cr. Short, seconded bv Cr. Johnson, it was decided to reply stating that the . rates should he paid on tho land in the same way as lor .private individuals. Radio A fast.'—The Telegraph Engineer wrote in connection with the erection of a wireless mast at the rear ol council section. The council decided to secure particulars of the exact position of the mast and stays. The A layer and Crs. Stevenson, Brown and the town clerk was asked toi wait on the postmaster in the matter. —(. r Short suggested the mast be placed oil Yolkner Island.
Valuations. —The Valuation Department- wrote in connection with objections to assessments. —Received.
Wharf Representation. —A letter was received in connection with wharf representation from the County Council. In reply t 0 the request for a conference. the council decided to fix 19th August as the date. Rest and Plunket Rooms. —The County Council also wrote on the subject of the suggested ladies’ rest and Plunket rooms.—Cr Bridget- said it was suggested the two councils met representatives of the Plunket Society, AVomen’s Division of tho Farmers’ "Union and A\ omen’s Institutes, ancl discuss the matter. Cr. .Brown said it was essential to get the assistance ol the women of the district. Cr Short said a meeting of the various women’s organisations should take place with the two councils and they could explain their requirements and suggestions could he made and then the councils would have something to go on. ’The suggestion met with general approval and the town clerk was instructed to get in touch with the various women’s organisations and the county council and 1 to arrange a conference for 9tli. August.
Drainage.—The health inspector wrote in connection with drainage at a property in Ford Street and said the waste could be run into the drain across a section. —Councillors said tho inspector was advising in opposition to. a previous case. On the motion of Cr Brown, seconded by Or Johnson, it was decided to ask the inspector to attend the next meeting of the council and to- refer him to the by-law dealing with drainage. Motor Taxation. —'The Canterbury Progress League wrote re motor taxation and asked for the council’s cooperation with other local bodies to bring about a desired change. The clerk said that an attempt was to bemade to have more money from the petrol tax spent on highways. Arbor Day.—The council was asked to observe Arbor day on August 3rd. as previously. General Business. The estimates for the year 1938-39 were considered, the rate proposed to be struck' showing an increase on last year. The farm lands list- as presented was approved.
