BOROUGH WORKS

The works committee' presented the following report:— Scarifying, metalling and rolling: 10 chain, Nelson Street, 10 chain, Union Street south; 5 chain, Church Street north; 5 chain, AVindsor Street. Approximately 90 yds. of metal patching various streets. Intersections graded and rolled. Church and Bridge Streets, Alain Highways: holes patched and graded. Intersection patched with Otnra rock. Ford Street, crown of road scarified and graded down. Approximately 20 chain drains cleaned out. Church Street (school block), shoulders graded down. Intersections swept three times. 300' chain water table cleaned' and most of spoil carted away. Blackberry cut in Ford Street and most of it. burnt

Footpaths. —Pipes raised Church Street footpath. Eight chains of concrete kerb put in and 3 chains of channel.

AVeeds chipped King and Church Street footpaths, and also at monument. Gateways and', crossings metalfed in most streets. Two new slab crossings made in Church Street.

Water. —Scour valves Richard and Bridge Streets scoured out. Aietors repaired. Three- 1 blow-outs repaired. Outlet drain at Clias. Payne’s cleaned out. Two flood-gates cleaned. Fire plugs cleaned and seven raised. New fire-plug indicators made, painted and erected. AVater service'installed Ford Street. Dam scoured out and intake cleaned.

Parks.—Fence on north side Arthur’s Park levelled down and new posts and wire fence erected. Waitangi Park, cleaned up and gate repaired. Trees planted in St. John Street, gaps filled and fence erected western side. Protections put around trees at Waioeka Bridge. Fence around plantation in King and Buchanan Streets repaired.

AVharf.—Men’s shelter at wliarl orocted. Three pieces 9x2 hardwood fitted) at wharf shed.

Cemetery.—'This has been cleaned and is being kept mown.

General. —Premix and concrete pipes, slabs and bearers made at yard. General maintenance carried out. 'The report was approved.

Cr Short, said lie would like, on behalf of the Fire Board, to compliment the council on the prompt attention given to the fire plugs. Cr Stevenson referred to the nig improvement in the work being done in the borough and other councillors agreed with his remarks. The Reserve.—On the motion of Cr Johnson, seconded by Cr Day, it was decided' to arrange for sheep to be grazed on the reserve.

Inspector’s Report—The report of the traffic inspector, Air J. 11. Aloreil, was approved.

Dangerous Practice. —C r Johnson referred to the dangerous practice ol children riding bicycles without- using the handlebars. —It was decided to draw the inspector’s attention to the matter. Council Inis also rel erred to the Avay tliat* children, sprout! thornselves all over the roadway. Drain-laying.—Or Day drew council’s attention to the question oi drain-laying on new building by unlicensed workers.—lt was decided so draw attention to the by-law.

Rubbish on Street—lt was pointed out that a resident was depositing rubbish in Brilliant Street and blocking the roadway.—Council decided to take 1 steps to have the trouble abated. Conduct at Pictures.—Cr Day referred to a- disturbance recently at an entertainment and said the conduct generally on Saturday night i\as not what it should he. Beer was also being taken into the theatre. Otliei councillors agreed that an iinpielement was necessary and the clerk was instructed to write to the management drawing his attention to the matter.

Dirty, Street—Cr Brown referred to the state of the main street on Satday mornings and suggested that a contract should he arranged for street cleaning on Sunday. Ibe council decided, to call for tenders for the work.

Stocks. —Cr Day also drew attention for the need of having an inventmy of working materials and plant made at regular intervals. The clerk said he agreed the matter should he gone into." Cr AY ebb said the council would find it a very difficult proposition as it had been tried before. It was decided! the works committee should discuss the matter with the loreman.
