MEETING AT OTARA

The Otara Institute met in the Otara Hall on Tuesday, the 12th. July, Mrs A. J. McCallion presiding.

The Institute Song and the Creed were followed by* the usual business. An apology was received from the president of the Woodlands Institute, which was unable to give the expected; programme owing to, sickness amongst its members, but- hopes to visit Otara next month. Owing to the epidemic of measles the stall to have been held on July 9th. has been postponed until Saturday, August 6th.

Several new members and visitors were welcomed, and .remits for the conference in Wellington yvere discussed.

The “Golden Thread” of local history was taken by Mrs A. J- McCallion, who gave an interesting account of an attack by the Maoris on several pakelias who were living in a whaie on what is now Mr H. McCallion s farm. A bayonet was shown which is believed to have been dropped by one of the pursued men. The 11 oil Call “What to do on a wet day” proved popular. Mrs Beattie, of Woodlands, demonstrated beautiful crayon work 0 n organdie. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Beattie, whose kindness in demonstrating at very short notice "" :lH very much appreciated. Part songs were sung hv Mrs C. Black a fid Mrs K. Brown, accompanied by Miss S. Butler. An animal competition was won by Mrs Jack Young. During afternoon tea a beautiful bouquet was presented to Mrs W. A. Gault as a mark of appreciation from the members ot her work for the Di.ima Circle.

In the set competition Miss S. Butler. was first- for the embroidered d’oyley, with Miss Lowe second. Mrs Moriee sour., was first for the howl of violets.

Hostesses for the afternoon were Medames Lowe and H. Medallion, and Miss Lowe. The National Anthem concluded an enjoyable meeting.
