PROTECTION OF ROADS COOK COUNTY WATCHFUL Loads weighing up to 13 tons will he transported between Gisborne and the oil drill -site at Totnngi. When the. Cook County Council was advised of. this at Wednesday’;* meeting, the county engineer. Mr'K. "F. Jones, was instructed to watch the position .carefully.
Messrs Nolan and Skcot. writing on behalf of. the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Limited, advised that the biggest singld lift would be 29.4601 b. The chairman, Cr W. G. Sherratt, stated that the company’s operations would have to be. very .carefully watched and not - allowed to do any damage to the roads. The loads would range up to 13 tons.' plus the weight of the vehicle.
Cr J.- F<. Benson: We are glad .that the boring for oil is being undertaken in this .district, and yet you are, going to hang them , up, perhaps stop Them. The chairman : We have to consider the interests of the ratepayers. AA’e are. not going to be hard' on them, but we must protect our ratepayers. Or Ivi. T. 13. Hall said that the council dicl not intend to be antagonistic.
The county engineer, Mr K. F. Jones, said he did: not think there would be any-trouble with the company, which seemed prepared to. work in with the council.
The engineer was instructed to watch the nosition carefully.
