OPOTIKI MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of.the Opotiki Women’s Institute >vas hold on the evening of Saturday, June 11th. There was a. large attendance of members, and also visitors from the Otara Institute. Ai’rs'T'isher presided, and after the singing of the Institute Song, the president read the Creed. Business matters were discussed, and it was decided to hold a Bring and Buy Stall later in the month, with the idea of augmenting the funds. .Another menir her was enrolled. The programme for the evening was varied. Airs Davey chose for her song “An Old Garden,” and in response to an encore rendered “Emblem”. Following these items the audience became greatly interested in a debate “Electric range versus wood and coal range.” Three of the Opotiki members, Messrs Hampton, Thompson and Fisher, spoke in favour of the electric range, and three representatives from Otara. Alesdames Jones. K. Brown and Aliss Gordon, upheld the wood and coal range. Both parties were must enthusiastic. and put up- a strong light. Airs Jcrram, of Nukuhou, kindly acted as judge and congratulated all the speakers on the way they had handled thensubject. Her summing up resulted in a win for Opotiki by 2 points; Opotiki securing 36 points and Otara 34. Airs Clem Black then contributed the song “ frees” by special -request, anil

in response to an encore sang very delightfully “The Cuckoo Clock”. Following these items the members were keenly interested in one of Airs Jerram’s popular travel talks, this time her subject being a visit to Holland, which was quite an education to her listeners, and enjoyed by all. The competition for the best collection 0 f flowers was won my Airs Alerry, while Airs Beattie secured second place. In a needlework competition Airs Aliller carried off both Ist and 2nd prizes. Soloists during the evening were accompanied by All’s Hampton and Aliss Svdenham.

The hostesses were Alesdames Bridge, K. Brown. Barrett, Davey and Abbot. The singing of the National Anthem terminated a very happy evening.
