“MAYTIME” Splendid in every sense of the meaning. Aletro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s lavish musical offering. “Maytime.” came to the Do Luxe Theatre yesterday with Jeanette AlacDonald and Nelson Edd\ in the staning roles. A deseriptoin of the original theme would he .superfluous to veterans of the theatre, hut it may he written here without fear of contradiction that the studio has gone far and beyond any beauty which the stage attained. “Alavtime” was a musical piece of gorgeous proportions when Rida Johnson Young’s play was on the hoards and it closely approaches the status oi a musical masterpiece on the screen. The skilful adaptation was made by Noel Langley. 'The songs were written bv- Sigmund llomherg. composer of the original Broadway score, and also by Herbert Stothart who lias composed the first film operetta, “Czanty.n”. which provides a lovely sequence in the picture. Jeanette AlacDonald and Nelson Ec'ldv rose to a unique stardom in “Naughty Marietta” and then in “Rose Marie.”

In tin* supporting cast oi “Maytime”. John Barrymore plays a picturesque role as the temcprainental impresaria, his first since the memorable “Romeo and Juliet”, which aas one of the sensational pictures of 1937. There is a newcomer in the fast-, Lynne Carver, a delicately beautiful young singer from Kentucky Blue Grass regions who sings and acts unusually weii. She and Tom Brown provide the juvenile romance in the story.

Aliss MacDonald and Eddy sing the stage production hit tune. “Mill Von Remember?” so effectively that leu who heard it will soon forget- it. -Miss AlacDonald also sings two complete operatic arias-and portions of otheis. Eddy has throe novelty songs. “Students’ Drinking Song,” ‘A ive L Opera” and “Virginia Ham and Eggs.” l n a touching duet- the stars sing “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny”.
