SOME NEW FACTS EX AM 1N AT LON ‘‘ H OWL KIRS’ : SYDNEY, March 16. Members of the Royal Australian Historical Society, at a dinner at the Hotel Metropole last night, were interested in a number of hitherto unpublished incidents iii Australian history reported bv, their president, Mr K. R. Cramp, in a paper which he read. i Mr Cramp called his paper “The Raw Material of History,” and bn several occasions he was so overcome with emotion that lie could not continue in the face of the' laughter from tlie members. The statements that “Macarthur was, the grandfather of the sheep industry, ’> and; that “lie imported some coarse mariners,” were not believed. Oilier startling' announcements made by Mr Cramp, who has marked many papers written by candidates at public examinations, were:— “Captain Cook was sent to watch the lisp of Venus.’’ “Phillip discovered the* iiiiost harbour in. the world, and called it the Pacific Ocean.” “Phillip found Manly where it now stands.” “Although a convict himself, Macartliur was very muehi opposed to the system.” j “The first sheep in Australia bad Jong, legs and German noses. The sheep went along by leaps and bounds.” " “William Charles Wentworth was born at Norfolk Island at the ago of 13.” “Wentworth, who was born in 1793 with two other men named Lag sen and Blaxland, attempted to ,’ross the Blue Mountains.” “Governor Macquarie constructed tlie Commonwealth Bank, the Bank of England, and the Sanitarium of .Music.” “Australia lias always been known under tlie title of the ‘White Elephant’ or ‘White Australia.’ ” “Alsacc-Lorrainne, a criminal from Chicago, was deported back to America.” “The League of Nations prevented raptures between Germany and tlie Allies.”
