OPOTIKI DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

NEW CAP AND JUDGE TO BE WORN BY BOYS An interesting addition to the uniform of the High School boys attending the Opotiki School will appear next term. Navy blue caps will be worn, on the front of which will he placed the school badge. An interesting change is also made to the badge which takes the form of a silver shield on which the monogram ancl school motto stand out in blue. The wearing of this addition to the uniform will place the school in line with some of the larger schools iix- the Dominion. The history attached to the badge is rather an interesting cue. The idea of having a badge was first thought of in about 1927 when tbc design was drawn up by Mir Brian Mansell, who was then a member of the fourth form. A competition for suggestoins for a suitable motto was held and Mr Steve Wa tony's suggestion “Kami e Mangere” which means “Never be Idle,” was the one accepted. Mr Watene. in later years lias become an outstanding footballer, it was under liis leadership of captain of the lootball team that Opotiki first won the Bay of Plenty School Shield. In more recent years Mr W atone has led the All Black Rugby League team in their successful tour of New South Wales and also in matches played in New Zealand.
