STORE NEARLY BURNED
SODIUM CHLORATE TAKES FIRE QriCKItY SUPPRESSED As the result of a cigarette butt being thrown clown on tlie footpath near" the wall of Messrs. Slialroon and Francis store last night, the low-, er boards eif the wall and the tar on the footpath caught, fire. The fire was noticed by Mr G. Shalloon junr., who had left- the picture theatre during the interval. Together with some companions he managed to stamp the flames out. Had nobody been about at the time the fire would soon have taken a firm hold. Sodium chlorate had Kbeji placed along the- Kelly street wall of the building by borough council employees in order to arrest the growth of grass which had taken hold along the bottom of the boarding. Owing to its highly inflammable nature the substance quickly took fire and it was very fortunate that- the fire was noticed and suppressed -in the early stages- as tlie sodium chlorate would have caught fire right- along, the wall of the building. Air. Shalloon and his helpers returned to the -pictures with scorched shoes and .trousers.
