A man named Monty Lowe, who drives one ot the engines' used m a contract at Waitawheta, met with an accident under somewhat peculiar circumstances. It appears that a Native was engaged with others in blasting, using powder for the purpose. He was caiiying a keg back to the shed when Lowe, who recognised the danger, rushed up and took the keg away. Unfortunately a spark from the engine ignited the contents —the keg contained 4lbs as against the usual 251 DS —and Lowe was severely burnt about the face.
