FOOTBALL.
OPENING OF SEASON.
The cup matches under the auspices of the Paeroa Rugby Union were commenced on Saturday afternoon, when the East and Netherton teams tried conclusions on the recreation ground at i Paeroa. The teams were well matched, and a fitting termination to a fairly strenuous, but not particularly scientific game, was a draw. For Netherton a try was secured by W. Fisher, and for . East a penalty goal was kicked by H. ' Sorensen. Mr P. Brenan refereed in a satisfactory manner. The game was played in the best possible spirit, and there was an entire absence of wrangling. It was only to be expected that the players would be a bit "green" so early in the season, and when they have a bit more practice some good games should eventuate. The Netherton players have plenty of weight, and when they learn a little about the finer points of the game—as they are bound to do with such able players as Dunn and Young in the team •—they will take a lot of beating. The East men, although a bit lighter than their opponents, played with rather more "head" and thus equalised matters.
