LOSS OF LEGS

SHUNTING ACCIDENT P.A. WELLINGTON, Dec. 10. Compound fractures, which later necessitated the amputation of both legs, were received by Mertin George, a railway fireman, aged 20, in an accident in the locomotive sheds at Thorndon about 11.40 a.m. to-day. George was riding on the back cowcatcher of an engine doing shunting operations. He was preparing to change points when the engine collided with a motor lorry, and as George attempted to jump clear he was dragged on the cowcatcher. His condition to-night was serious.
