By the Sporting Editor December 13 ... Tapanui R.C. December 13 .. Otaki-Maori R.C December 13 .. Manawatu R.C December 20 .. Ohinemuri R.C December 20 .. Waipa R.C. Nominations for the Wyndham and Southland meetings are due to-day. Citril will do her future racing in open company, and has been nominated for the Publicans' Handicap at Wingatui. Nominated for Wingatui r In three starts this season Oronoko has failed to reach a place. Last season, as a two-year-old, his record was five starts for two wins and a second. The Sir Crusoe galloper, who is trained by E. J. Ellis, has been nominated for the D.J.C. meeting. , Avondale Winner Finest Hour, winner of a division of the Sapling Handicap at Avondale, was got by Contact from Hauteur, by Honour from Egotism, by Demosthenes from Conceit, by Boniform from Lady Wayward 11, by Ladas. Beaulivre Filly Invest, who is now in T. E. Pankhurst’s stable at Invercargill, was formerly trained by L. J. Ellis at Riccarton for Mr E. N. Fitzgerald. A three-year-old filly by Beaulivre, she was got from Golden Blonde, by Defoe from Crisis, by Polydamon from Cricium, by, Phoebus Apollo. Howe’s Performances Howe came through his third race at the C.J.C. meeting with his reputation further enhanced. In spite of his big weight, he staged a characteristic run in the straight and, although he had to be satisfied with second place in the Fendalton Handicap, he beat all the fancied candidates. Events may prove that he was taking on an exceptional task when he tried to concede practically three stone to Revolte, an improving horse of his own age. Howe's latest performance demonstrated his ability at a mile and a-quarter. and he carries weight so well that he can be marked off for another winning turn very soon. Salmon Spear The Southland gelding, Salmon Spear, ran another sound race when he finished third in the Fendalton Handicap. He was handy tnost of the way, but again, as on the first day, Howe beat him near the winning post. Salmon Spear looks a good prospect for the holiday meetings in the south. Holiday Prospect Gay Stroller, who finished fourth in the Fendalton Handicap, was well placed throughout the journey, but he lacked the little extra dash that would have been helpful at the finish. He is very well, however, and his turn should come during the holidays. Holiday Meetings The nominations received for the Dunedin Waikouaiti, Oamaru and Kurow meetings are more than satisfactory and good fields throughout the circuit are assured. The nominations for Waikouaiti number 233, Oamaru 278. and Kurow 335, a total of 846. Included .in the r.ominal tions for the Dunedin Cup is that of tne Australian galloper, Silver Link, and winners at the recent New Zealand Cup meeting in Fine Night, Wantwood, Voltaire, Trident, Citril, Spare Part and Frances are engaged at the meeting, which carries bright prospects of success. Handicaps will be declared on Monday and acceptances are due on Friday of next week. Impressive Run Frances was having her only start at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting when she won the Members’ Handicap. She was back in the middle of the field early, and still was giving away a start to the leaders when the straight was reached. She turned for. home wide out and came home with an impressive run, which enabled her to head off four speedy rivals, who were almost in line, a neck behind her, at the winning post. Frances has other good form to her credit, but this was her best effort to date, with prospects, however, that she will go on to even better deeds. Her dam, Trivet, is a half-sister to Kerbside, the dam of Hearth, a winner up to a mile and three furlongs, also of Prize Ring, who adds to his succceses on the fiat some very good form over hurdles. On her breeding, Frances appeals as a stayer.
