NOTES FROM RICCARTON

Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 9. J. A. McFarlane has lodged an appeal against the penalty of 12 months’ suspension from race riding, imposed on him for his handling of Indian Dawn in the Fendalton Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. Faithful Pal was nominated for the hack and open sprints at Otaki on Saturday, and if suitable arrangements can be made, C. G. Humphries will send him north on Thursday. C. G. Humphries intends to leave for Auckland on Friday. He will take Royal Tan, a fancied candidate for the Auckland Cup, also the three-year-old Magnaform, who has a Derby engagement. R. E. McLellan returned home to Southland after Saturday’s racing. He is expected back on Thursday and he has arranged to leave with Signal Officer on Friday, on his way to Auckland. T. Hi Gillett has made plans for a trip to Auckland with Miss Medley. The mare has been sore, however, as the result of a slight mishap and the programme will depend on her progress during the next day or two. Though he may not have any of his own team racing there, L. J. Ellis has made arrangements to be in Auckland for the holidays. He will ride Royal Tan in the Auckland Cup and Blue Trout in the Railway Handicap, also Magnaform in the Great Northern Derby. C. T. Wilson was offered the riding on Signal Officer, at the Auckland meeting, but he will not go north. He has decided to ride at the Dunedin meeting, with Waikouaiti and Oamaru to follow. There is a report that T. Green may Be on Signal Officer in the Auckland Cup, but I have not heard anything on this subject from the connections of the Southland gelding. The Trentham trainer, W. J. Bromby, did well, with three of the horses he had at Riccarton, Howe having two wins and a second. Renowned a win and a second, while Distinction was twice second and once third. Arrangements have been made for tw.o of these horses to go to Auckland, Howe to start off in the Auckland Cup, while Distinction will run in the Derby. Renowned will remain nearer home, and she is booked for the Wairarapa Cup on New Year’s Day. It is hoped that the riding at Auckland will be done by R. J. Mackie, who handled Howe in his three races at Riccarton.
