WATERSIDERS’ WARNING
REFUSAL TO WORK SHIPS UNHYGIENIC CONDITIONS REPORTED Rec. 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 8. A warning that watersiders will not work on rat-infested and dirty ships has been given the Sydney Port Committee by the Waterside Workers’ Federation. In making this announcement today the Sydney president of the federation, Mr l T. Nelson, added that the public would be shocked if they were aware of the conditions under which foodstuffs were transported. For months the federation had attempted to arrange a conference of Government authorities to lay down a plan covering hygiene in ships. Foodstuffs were loaded into vessels which had not been cleaned up after conveying cargoes of poison. Some vessels were badly infested with rats which had eaten parts of cargoes and watersiders’ clothing. The federation wanted a Government inquiry into the filthy condition of ships.
