TOWN AND COUNTRY
MATCHES IN NORTH * WELLINGTON GAME ABANDONED PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. Confident batting by C. G. Rowe, who showed a welcome return to his good form of three seasons ago, and by J. A. Ongley and T. P. Reaney enabled .Country to amass the sound total- of 302 for five wickets in reply to Town’s 253 when rain caused the annual cricket fixture to be abandoned on Saturday. The conditions were all in favour, of the. batsmen, the wicket being easy, in addition to which light rain fell intermittently and handicapped the bowlers. These factors militated against the game as a trial for Plunket Shield purposes, though sufficient .was seen to indicate the prospects, of the Country supplying three and possibly four to the Wellington representative side. Tlie most impressive of the young players tried out for Town was J. Reid, the 20-year-old Hutt Valley batsman. R. Marvelly, the 16-year-old left-hand bowler, was used sparingly on account of the wet weather, hut indicated that he already has control of length and spin which may enable him .to reach good class.
