BRIGHT BATTING

FIVE POINTS TO KAIKORAI The second day’s play in the game between Kaikorai and North-East Valley at Bishopscourt produced a higher standard of batting than that seen on the previous Saturday. Kaikorai secured a fivepoint win. The side carried its openingday total of 119 for five wickets to 236 for nine, when the innings was declared closed. K. Burke, L. Stewart and E. Renr.ick batted attractively. Kaikorai had a first-innings lead of 107. They failed to dispose of the opposition for a moderate total in • their second innings, largely through a century partnership between R. Jones and H. Ottway. B. Sutcliffe started brightly in North-East Valley’s second innings, scoring three 4’s from F. Stanley’s first over, but the bowler had his revenge in his third over, when Sutcliffe failed to connect cleanly with one of his " bumpers,” and was caught at square-leg. Ottway and Jones played bright cricket. Ottway was dropped when he had made three, and his partner when in his thirties. The scoring continued at a brisk pace when C. Guy joined Ottway. Both batsmen took risks, but the second century was hoisted in 138 minutes. Ottway gave a chance in the slips when he had made 88, but he reached his century in 130 minutes. His score included 11 4’s. C. Guy also batted forcefully, and was not out with 45 to his credit. At stumps North-East Valley had made 226 for the loss of four wickets. Scores:— ( North-East Valley
