EARLY OTAGO HISTORY
Sir,—The radio talks on the early history of Otago are proving most illuminating. I was particularly interested in that given by Dr McLintock last week concerning Lieutenant Tuckett’s examination of the coastline with a view to the selection of a site for the settlement which became Dunedin. It strengthened a previous reflection that the intimate connection of Tuckett and his work with Otago has been just too much overlooked in commemorations marking the years of the growth and maturity of our city Is it not a little strange that the name of this intrepid seaman and explorer, who faced all manner of risks and difficulties in his determination to carry out his exacting, and indeed, hazardous task, in as thorough a manner as possible, has been so much overshadowed and forgotten? The name of his ship only has been perpetuated in that of Deborah Bay. Names of the actual founders of the Otago settlement have been duplicated, if not triplicated, often enough in our topographical nomenclature. The blank omission of that of Tuckett is surely surprising, and should be remedied.—l am, etc., Deborah.
