Sir,—The Chambers of Commerce recently issued a statement supporting the Aid to Britain organisation’s decision not to make Britain a gift of money, on the ground that Britain does not need money, but food. That idea is misleading. What Britain needs is release from her terrible overseas indebtedness. Part of that indebtedness is New Zealand’s 1.0. U. of £100,000,000, for which we demand goods now or some time. If we cancel that debt, Britain will have that amount of goods available to sell to dollar countries. Meantime, we, like Australia, are building up in London ample additional credit for future imports. We do not need the £100,000,000 At present New Zealand is demanding goods for every penny of it, which makes our Aid to Britain pretence a mockery—l am etc., Otahuhu. Arthur Sainsbury.
