FAST SKI RUN

STEEP SLOPE OF MOUNT EGMONT P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 4. At 1.26 p.m. yesterday a young man stood poised on skis on the southern rim of Mount Egmont’s crater. Fortyfive seconds later he was at Rangitoto Flat, three-quarters of a mile below. Franz Skardarasy had realised his dream and had skied down the steepest slope of Mount Egmont in straight running. His performance was made possible by the use of a cape resembling wings. This, stretched across his back and attached to his wrists and ankles, acted as a brake to reduce speed. The cape was entirely successful, but, even so. a speed of 60 miles an hour thrilled the single onlooker. Skardarasy himself commented that it was “ very fast.” . . Skardarasy had made three visits to Mount Egmont in search of suitable weather and snow conditions to make the run down the 2000-foot slope.
