WARM APPROVAL
LAST RESTRICTIONS REMOVED NEW ZEALAND CONSTITUTION BILL PASSED
Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 2. The House of Lords took through all its remaining stages and passed the New Zealand Constitution (Amendment) Bill, giving the New Zealand Government complete freedom to amend the constitution according to its own wishes. Lord Addison, who moved the Bill’s second reading, said it gave the New Zealand Government complete freedom to amend its constitution according to its own wishes. This meant that the complete independence of New Zealand was accorded although, in fact, it had been- independent for a long time and the House of Lords had received the full measure of New Zealand’s co-operation in defence of that freedom. The Marquis of Salisbury said New Zealand had now achieved full maturity and was a wise and experienced member of the United Nations. She no longer needed any leading-strings and if she was closer to Britain than ever it was not because of any statutory limitations, but because of other and stronger ties. The Bill was read a second time and passed its remaining stages with the warm approval of the whole House. Mr Jordan sat in the diplomats’ gallery during the debate.
