IN THE LIMELIGHT
THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEMBERS REVIEW SESSION P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. Not for many years had the Legislative Council been so prominently in the limelight as during the present session, and the result had been greater interest in the Council’s work, said Mr W. Lee Martin in the Legislative Council this morning. During the valedictory speeches to mark the close of the session, several speakers referred to the fact that there was some doubt about the future of the Council in its present form, and that a committee would sit during the recess to discuss the matter. Tne session had been uneventful so far as the council was concerned and the publicity it had received had been to its advantage, said Mr Martin. The Council had emerged with credit from the discussions which had taken place, and its work during the session had been really worthwhile. It had been said that the Council was in the melting pot, but he thought it would go on for years, if not as at present, then at least as a useful adjunct to the Legislature of the country. The Council had been discussed more in recent months than perhaps at any other time in its existence, said the acting Speaker, Mr B. Martin. They could look forward with interest to the next session and to the results of the discussions that were to take place on the future of the Council. Members h'o carried out their task with credit and their work was of benefit to the people of New Zealand. He looked forward to the day when the Council would be able to give greater service than was possible in the past. It was probable that some changes would be made in its present form, but he knew members would perform their tasks wi<h the same zeal they had shown in the past.
