SALES OF MILK

WHOLESALE AND RETAIL DEFINITION OF TERMS Although the zoning of milk for wholesale distribution has not been implemented in Dunedin as yet, and is not likely to be introduced for some months, the Metropolitan Milk Board has been concerned of late as to what quantities are involved when the terms “retail” and “wholesale” are used. The Dunedin Milk Vendors’ Association was invited to submit its views on the subject and the advice of the Milk Marketing Division was aiso sought. At the meeting of the board last night it was decided to adopt the scheme submitted by the local vendors.

For the purpose of framing by-laws relating to milk sales, it was decided therefore, than wholesale milk will be milk sold to all shop dairies and commercial users who take an hverage of at least two gallons a day. Retail milk will include all milk soid other than for resale, and also that sold to commercial users who take less than two gallons daily. The report of the chief inspector. Mr G. E. Stokes, shouted that of 50 samples taken, 29 failed to comply with the regulations. Two were deficient in milk fat, one failed to comply with the reductase test, 13 were deficient in solids other than milk fat and 13 were dirty. In addition, 108 interviews were carried out during October in connection with zoning, storage of milk receptacles, licences, dirty bottles, tainted milk, late delivery of milk, the position of receptacle boxes, and the suitability of vehicles for licence. Eight sources of supply were checked and found to be satisfactory. Thirteen complaints were received regarding the quality of milk supplied and check samples taken.

Mr W. B. Taverner presided. Others present were Mr J. H. Hinton, Mr J. F. Macartney, Mr R. F. Barr. Mr,J. McD. Foster, Mr G. Millar and Dr G. O. L. Dempster.
