WANGANELLA REPAIRS
PROBABLE COMMENCEMENT IN JANUARY YEAR AFTER STRANDING P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. January 17 and 19 have been pencilled in as likely dates for the docking of the Huddart, Parker liner Wanganella in the Wellington floating dock for permanent repairs. January 19 will be the first anniversary of the stranding of the vessel on Barrett’s Reef. Asked about the repair arrangements last night, Mr James Cable, of William Cable and Co., Ltd., the repair contractors, said that January 17 and 19 were at this stage only tentative dates, as the date of arrival of the steel plates from Britain was still uncertain.
Current reports that the ship would be cut back to the bridge and rebuilt from there were quite wrong. The work involved was the simple reconditioning of the damaged forepart of the hull.
Skilled boilermakers, welders, and other workers would have to be. brought in from outside Wellington, said Mr Cable, but it was not possible to tell yet whether it would be necessary to secure skilled men from overseas. Arrangements for the supply of workers could not be carried far until the New Year.
