Jottings , Nominations for the Tapanui meeting are due to-day. Moneybird is still suffering from a knee injury, and will not be taken to Riccarton. W. J. Broughton, who is at the head of the winning jockeys’ list with 22 successes, did not ride a winner on Saturday.

Disappeared Quickly Deep Harmony showed speed in the early stages of the Steward’s Handicap, and lay second to Blue Trout for half the journey, but he then disappeared quickly. Dunedin Owner’s Purchase Thornbridge, who in future will race in the interests of Mr A. Ferguson, of Dunedin, has been spelling since February. As a four-year-old he won the Ashburton Handicap and the Teschemaker Handicap, and ran second to Signal Officer in the Metropolitan Handicap. Metropolitan Records The weight-carrying record for the Metropolitan Handicap is held by Royal Chief, who won in 1940 with 9.12. Argentic, who won in 1936 and 1937, put u# the time record of 2min 30sec when he won the second time.

Gallop at Wingatui At Wingatui yesterday morning Foxchase and Special Flight were galloped over five furlongs on the outside of the track in lmin Bsec. but Foxchase could have improved on that. Nightmarch Filly Morning Watch was never far from the leaders in the Apprentices’ Handicap on Saturday, and the Nightmarch filly should pay her way at some of the meetings to be held during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Rode Fourteen Winners

At the 1903 Cup meeting L. H. Hewitt put up a remarkable riding record, riding no fewer than 14 winners, including the winners of the Cup, the Welcome Stakes, the Derby, the Oaks, the Canterbury Cup, and the Jubilee Cup. Hawera Youngster

Curtana was expected to race prominently in the Welcome Stakes, but she never looked like reaching a place. The Paper Slipper filly ran second to Musselman in the Roseneath Handicap at Trentham. She is trained at Hawera by G. W. Moore, who also had Rumba, a Probation colt, in the same race. > Sir Galloway Youngster Village Beauty was prominent throughout the running of the Spring Nursery Handicap, and finished fifth. A brown filly by Sir Galloway, she was got from Traction, by Tractor from Droski, by Stepniak from Whirlpool, and she Is trained at Washdyke by F. Trilford. From Awapuni Sea Fury, who finished fifth in the Stewards’, is a four-year-old mare by Tiderace from Ohui, by Absurd from Tahua, by Obiigado from Te Huinga, by Hotchkiss from Sunningdale, by Hampton. She races in the interests of Mr A. E. Preston, and is trained for him by C. J. Thompson at Awapuni.

Trainers’ Successes Successful trainers at Riccarton on Saturday were: F. Trilford, Washdyke (Fading Light, in hurdles); V. A. Lee. Riccarton (Balkis, in Spring Nursery); R. A. Tudor, Masterton (Liebestraum, in the Derby); F. Shaw, Wingatui (Fine Night, in the Apprentices’ Handicap); J. G. Farrell, Stratford (Beau Le Havre, in the Cup); G. Ridgway, Riccarton (Trident, in the Welcome Stakes), T. E. Pankhurst, Invercargill (Wantwood, in the Stewards’), and W. J. Bromby, Trentham (Howe, in the Riccarton Handicap).

Lacking in Stamina With half the journey covered in the Stewards’, Blue Trout had put such a break between herself and the others that she looked Unbeatable. In the run home, however, she came back to the field very quickly and was well beaten into fourth place. The Robin Goodfellow mare has brilliant speed, but as yet has not sufficient stamina on which to base it. A Good Performance Voltaic ran a fine race in the Stewards’ and just short of the post he looked like the winner, but Wantwood, responding gamely to L. J. Ellis’s urging, just got up in the last stride. Wantwood had a pull of half a stone, and started from eight at the barrier, while Voltaic was in berth 19. The Revelation four-year-old is well up to weight, and the Awapuni trainer, G. W. New, should have a successful season with him.
