JUMPING AND HUNTING
A programme of jumping, hunting, and pony events was held in the afternoon, in which the standard of performance generally was high. Mr D. F. O’Connell’s Viking, which recently won the Australasian Championship in the Noith Island, was successful in the Otago Hunt Club class over a difficult course. The judge, Mr M. F. Maze, of Pleasant Point, said that Viking’s performance was almost faultless. There was ltitle to choose between second and third placings, and the standard of the first six horses was high. In the Hunting Competition for lady riders Mr E; H. Aubrey’s Granite was successful, with Viking In second place. The judge said that Granite’s was a great exhibition, the horse being slightly fnore under control than Viking. There was little, to .choose between the two, however. Great interest was shown in the preliminaries for the Otago Steer Riding Championship, which will be decided to-day among six finalists. Some of the animals were docile enough for the riders to have complete mastery, but two Herefords gave the crowd, as well as the riders, a series of thrills. There were 10 • competitors.
