EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

FIRE IN PRINTING PLANT P A WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. Valuable printing machinery was severely damaged and large stocks of paper were destroyed by fire at the premises of the Commercial Printing and Publishing Company of New Zealand, Boulcott avenue, at an early hour this morning. Residents were awakened by dense smoke pouring from tim building, and some alarm was felt among women who were roused from their beds at the nearby Y.W.C.A. Hostel. The alarm was given by a woman who was awakened by the smell of smoke in the bedroom of the St. George Hotel. Nine engines attended the outbreak, which was quickly suppressed, but the damage is estimated at several thousands of pounds. Hundreds of galleys of type were reduced to molten lead by the flames, and weighty printing formes crashed through the first floor on to the recently acquired printing press, which was badly damaged.
