DATES CHANGED
APPLICATION OF BILL WORKERS’ COMPENSATION MEASURE Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. The commencement date of the increased benefits under the Workers’ Compensation Amendment Bill had been advanced to April 1 next from June 1, stated the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, when explaining to the House of Representatives to-day amendments made to the Bill by the Labour Bills Committee. The Minister added that the commencement date for the taking over of the workers’ accident insurance business had been put back to April 1, 1949, and provision had been made for exemption of local bodies who carried their own insurance. Mr W. A. Sheat (Nat., Fatea), who was a member of the committee, said that so strong a case was presented by certain witnesses who come before the committee that the Minister was forced to grant substantial amendments to such an extent that the original idea of a State monopoly of accident insurance had been substantially abandoned.
